Christmas Message

One of the greatest things about Christmas is that its a time for family and friends to come together. But while we all enjoy this special day, there are people up and down the country who continue to work.

People like the emergency service workers - the police officers, the fire fighters and the doctors and nurses and many others who will help those in difficulty over the holiday.

We must also remember the brave men and women in our Armed Forces. They continue to protect our country across the globe, often a long way from their families.

There are many others who let us enjoy Christmas like the power station workers who make sure we have electricity and the broadcasters who ensure all our favourite Christmas television programmes run.

All these people make Christmas possible for the rest of us and we must be thankful for their work.

Looking ahead to the New Year, I think we can all approach 2014 with more optimism then we have for many years. The economy is showing good signs of recovery, unemployment is falling and the deficit is down. Although times are still tough for many families, things are looking up.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
