New Year's Honours

You will not be surprised to know that I was delighted to be awarded a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list, writes Peter Luff MP. I was told, privately in November – that letter was a real surprise and the icing on the cake of a great life in politics.

The many letters of congratulations from constituents and the kind words they contain have all been deeply appreciated.

In fact I need to thank my constituents for this award. It is you who, by electing me at successive elections, gave me the opportunity to serve and represent this wonderful part of the country. I am truly grateful.

In Droitwich we have achieved so much together – always together.

The reopening of the canals is perhaps the best thing that has happened to the Spa while I have been a Member of Parliament. I certainly cannot take the credit for this, but I was very pleased and proud to be a link in the chain, helping to persuade the regional development agency, the heritage lottery fund and others of the case.

The reopening of the Lido was another great achievement for the town where I was pleased to play a modest part. Here’s hoping for more scorching summers like last year’s to make sure the Lido goes from strength to strength, bringing enjoyment to Droitwich families for years to come.

In both cases it was the determination of all of us, the enthusiasts, local people and the councils that won the day.

And it’s not over yet! There is well over a year before I stand down and there’s still much to be done – getting the Brine Baths sorted is just one example of the many challenges that remain.

So, I want to pay tribute to you. I would not have received this honour without you and it is right that I share it with the people I have been so proud to serve for two decades.
