The Leveson Report
Email Campaign

I am glad that Lord Levesonís general principles have been accepted by all the major political Parties. This is very encouraging.
It is now up to those Parties to come together and discuss how best to achieve Levesonís principles. We can be confident, though, that it now seems inevitable that a new and significantly improved system of press regulation will be introduced which will support both real investigative journalism and free speech while protecting the rights of the vulnerable and innocent.

That leaves the question of statutory underpinning of these new arrangements. Personally I am torn between a deep-seated conviction that the national press simply cannot be trusted to regulate themselves and my fear that any statutory underpinning of such regulation could indeed risk undermining legitimate freedoms.

I am carefully considering my position and will wait to see the draft legislation and the reactions to it before deciding how I will cast any vote.
