CANALS THAT “TRANSFORMED A COUNTRY AND A TOWN” REOPENED

Speaking at the reopening of the Droitwich Barge and Junction Canals today, Mid Worcestershire MP Peter Luff said,

“Today we celebrate many things.

“The salt that is the reason for this town and these canals, the civil engineering that has been brought back to life, the partnership that has brought us to this moment and the volunteers that kept alive the dream of reopening these canals.

“So these are not just canals; they tell - and are part of - a powerful story of our country and our town. Canals transformed this nation.

“But above all today we celebrate the renaissance of two canals.

“I have been involved, doing what I can to make sure today happened for a mere 14 years – just footprints in the sands of time.

“Looking back, future generations will say that the Barge and Junction Canals were conceived and built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, closed in the twentieth century, reopened in the twenty first century and brought pleasure and opportunity into the twenty second century and beyond.

“In that spirit, I welcome our distinguished speakers, all partners in this great venture that comes to its triumphant conclusion today.”
