TIME TO GET TEENAGERS EXCITED ABOUT MANUFACTURING CAREERS SAYS LOCAL MP

“British manufacturing industry is crying out for talented young people,” says Peter Luff, MP for Mid Worcestershire, and that’s why he written to schools in his area inviting young people aged 13-16 (year groups 9-11) to take part in an exciting new competition, promoting manufacturing as a career for young people.
The We Made It! Competition, run by Dods Manufacturing Dialogue, gives pupils the opportunity to submit designs and ideas for a gadget, gizmo, toy or tool they'd like to see made. Any invention, no matter how creative, is welcome.

The competition is open for the next four months and all entries will be judged by Peter Luff. The local competition winner will be invited to attend a reception and awards ceremony in parliament, where a group of organisations involved in manufacturing, including Boeing, The Manufacturing Institute, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Finmeccanica, Renewable UK, the Confederation of Paper Industries and Lloyds Banking Group will crown the overall winner.

The best entries nationwide will win the chance to see their designs brought to life and manufactured in the outstanding facilities provided by MIT and the Manufacturing Institute.

Peter Luff said:

“The UK is one of the top ten manufacturers in the world and it is important that young people know about the exciting and rewarding career opportunities that are available in this sector. I know from my work as Defence Equipment minister that companies are crying out for skilled scientists and engineers.

“Britain desperately needs more young people aspiring to high-level manufacturing jobs. So I’m delighted to be taking part in this competition which aims to give young people a better understanding of how the industry and businesses involved in manufacturing actually work.

“I am looking forward to judging all the entries from pupils in my constituency and am hopeful Mid Worcestershire will provide the overall winner.”
