Join the Search to Celebrate Spa Business Talent

Peter Luff, MP for Mid Worcestershire and Neil Westwood, whose company Magic Whiteboard won investment from the BBC’s Dragons’ Den, have given their backing to a new competition to reward business talent in Droitwich Spa called the Spa Enterprise Business Awards (SEBA) 2013.

SEBA, which has been set up as a Social Enterprise, has designed this competition to offer an fresh blend of networking opportunities for the established business community and a competition to celebrate and reward emerging business talent in the town and surrounding areas and crowning them ‘SEBA Stars’. The three competition categories will focus on innovation, entrepreneurship and new business start-ups for which a winner and runner-up will be appointed for each category. The combined value of all the prizes on offer to the competition winners is nearly £8,000 including cash prizes, trophies and prizes pledged by established businesses.

Nearly 30 businesses have pledged prizes including accountancy services, HR assessments, business coaching, free corporate or family photography session, virtual office services, print services, stationery supplies as well as some fun prizes including a dinner for two, private gym membership and spa treatments. Current sponsors include Event Elephant, Droitwich Spa Area Partnership, Droitwich Print, Best of Droitwich, Chessgrove Day Spa, Richards Sandy Accountants, Jan Jones Business Mentor and Coach, Midwest Rural Partnership, David Lloyd and AKW.

The competition was inspired by the experience of its Project Director, Jacqui Morley, who following redundancy in 2012, set up her own business as a freelance Project and Event Manager and wanted to encourage others to take their first brave steps into self-employment. Jacqui is supported by a team of 13 volunteers from local businesses and organisations who assist on the SEBA Project Team and Judging Panel.

Successful BBC Dragons’ Den winner, Neil Westwood who is SEBA’s celebrity judge commented, “It’s great to be part of the SEBA team as I know just how much value and benefit business competitions can offer. Businesses, particularly those who are just starting out, can use competitions to help build profile, credibility and networking opportunities, let alone the prizes on offer for the winners. I’m really looking forward to seeing the competition entries and to be on the receiving end of the pitches from the candidates rather than the one presenting!”

Commenting on the SEBA project, Peter Luff said, “Things aren’t easy for a lot of businesses right now, but even in tough times, good things can happen. I’ve seen many local companies who are prospering despite the challenges and we can learn from them and share their important lessons. That’s why I welcome the Spa Enterprise Business Awards so warmly. There’s a lot of business talent in Worcestershire and I hope these awards encourage even more entrepreneurs to start-up businesses and create local jobs.”

SEBA will be announcing the opening of the competition with a PR launch and networking event on Friday 19th April 2013 at the newly refurbished St Andrews Town Hotel, Droitwich Spa from 11am to 1pm. Both Peter Luff and Neil Westwood are both keynote speakers at this FREE to attend event which is open to all and when there will also be a FREE draw to win a bottle of champagne. The competition’s sponsors and stakeholders will have stands and displays to promote their businesses and an opportunity to network with like-minded businesses.

Entries to the competition can be made by downloading the application form from the competition’s website www.sebastars.co.uk . The deadline for entries is midnight on 15th September 2013. Shortlisted companies will be invited to make a presentation to the judging panel who are being affectionately referred to as the ‘SEBA Droitwich Dragons’ and the winners and runners up will be announced at the Awards Night on 25th November.
