SCHOOLS THE BIG WINNER AS SPENDING REVIEW BRINGS GOOD NEWS FOR MID WORCESTERSHIRE
News Story

Peter Luff, the Member of Parliament for Mid Worcestershire, has welcomed the Chancellor’s Comprehensive Spending Review yesterday and the follow-up statement on infrastructure today, because of the benefits they bring to the county.

Peter explained,

“There were three particular good news stories for local residents in the Spending Review and infrastructure statement.

“First is the announcement of investment in easing delays on the county’s major motorway. The Government is going to invest £140 million through a Managed Motorway Scheme on the M5, between Junction 4a and Junction 6, to the delight of those who use that busy stretch of road regularly. These schemes, using variable speed limits and opening up the hard shoulder at peak times, bring real improvements in traffic flow.

“Second, is the continued council tax freeze. Council tax bills will be kept down as the Chancellor announced that the Government will continue to support councils to freeze council tax in 2014-15 and 2015-16. This will mean nearly £100 off the average council tax bill for families over the next two years.

“Finally, and perhaps most significant is the commitment to deliver fairer funding for schools. The national funding formula has for too long discriminated against pupils in Worcestershire and the Chancellor’s commitment to solve this unjust funding formula will be very welcome news for schools. I have been fighting this battle for nearly a quarter of a century so it’s really overdue, but none the less welcome for that!”
