Christmas Competition

Put your thinking caps on – and win a prize. Let me explain.

The Chancellor’s Autumn Statement last week contained some good news for transport in Worcestershire with welcome improvements to the M5. But I was disappointed that he said nothing about faster journey times for our rail service to Oxford and London.

The lucky people of Norwich, on the other hand, secured a high profile commitment to improve their train service. Yet Norwich already has a half-hourly service and a two hour journey time from London – things we can only dream of in Worcestershire.

This just isn’t fair! Norwich and Worcester are similar sized cities, roughly the same distance from London. The two lines serve same similar populations and similar sized economies.

The success of the Norwich campaign in gaining a service that takes ninety minutes owes a lot to its name – ‘Norwich in Ninety’. It is catchy and memorable and it’s played a big part in making the government sit up and listen.

I have been racking my brain trying to come up with something similar for our campaign to improve train services to and from Worcestershire. I haven’t had much success so far and I am hoping local people can help me.

So, I am running a Christmas competition to come up with a catchy campaign slogan that says we too want a train service from London to Worcester that takes less than two hours.

This is a first for me, but I’m sure a snappy phrase could play a big part in winning us a better train service. More frequent and quicker services to London would be a big boost to our economy, as well as making it easy for us all to travel to the Capital.

The competition is open to all Worcestershire residents and the winner will receive a House of Commons watch – so you’re never late for a train again. It closes on January 6th.

Please email your suggestions to peter.luff.mp@parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. Good luck!
