LUFF'S CONCERN OVER HEAVY CONCENTRATION OF PLANNED POST OFFICE CLOSURES
News Story

Peter Luff today expressed concern at the heavy concentration of post office closures planned for the Vale of Evesham area.

The total number of proposed closures in Mid Worcestershire is precisely in line with his expectations, and while he is pleased that the other rural areas of his constituency and the Droitwich area appear to have escaped any closures, he is worried about the serious impact on the south-east of Worcestershire.

Peter said,

"None of these closures need have happened if the government had not been so active in discouraging people from using post offices. Yes, they would have lost business anyhow as more of us chose to go on-line to buy things like car tax, but if the government hadn't put such pressure on benefit recipients to have their payments made into bank accounts, Post Office Ltd would have had more time to find new sources of business. The blame for each and every one of these closures rests firmly with the government."

He was making his comments on the basis of initial briefing from Post Office Ltd and will make no further specific observations until he has spoken to all the sub post masters involved.
