MARKS AND SPENCER URGED TO THINK AGAIN

Evesham MP Peter Luff has written to Marks and Spencers urging them to reconsider their decision to close their “Simply Food” store in the Riverside Centre, Evesham.

In a letter to the company, Peter writes,

“It goes without saying that if there is the remotest possibility of a reconsideration of Marks and Spencer’s position, I would be delighted. Your decision will strike a dagger blow at the heart of the economy of Evesham, coming as it does after a number of similar decisions by other retailers.

“If there is anything that Wychavon District Council, the County Council or the community in Evesham can do to persuade you to change your mind, we would wish to do so. We just cannot be without your presence in the town in the current economic situation.”

Commenting, Peter said,

“I understand that the company is still consulting on the store’s future, but in my conversations with the company I have gained the impression that the store’s disappointing financial performance pretty well settles the matter. I hope I am wrong.

“We are now in a desperately serious recession, and I know that Marks and Spencers can’t be expected to operate stores at a loss, but the store and the site are so important to the town that I really hope we can persuade them to change their minds. Evesham has a bright future and as the town expands in the future, I am sure the company could make good money from this excellent shop. The hard-working staff there deserve much better too.”
