Canals Dream Begins To Come True
News Story

Droitwich MP Peter Luff today gave a big welcome to the beginning of the construction work needed to re-open the Droitwich canals.

Peter was on hand for the formal ceremony where all the partners marked the occasion on Hanbury Road in Droitwich.

Commenting Peter said,

"Local people have been campaigning for this day for decades. Over those years hopes have been raised and then dashed, but today we can say with confidence that the canals will re-open. It's just a matter of time.

"I want to say a big thank you to all the partners - and especially to Wychavon district council who have spent so much effort on this important project. Of course all the other partners - the county council, the regional development agency, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Waterways Trust and British Waterways have done a fantastic job too.

"But above all today our thanks must go the volunteers of the Droitwich Canals Trust. Their hard work, determination, patience and enthusiasm have been rewarded today. The town and the wider community owe them a great debt.

"When the Droitwich Barge and Junction canals are re-opened within about two years, they will bring big benefits to the economy of south Worcestershire - and Worcester city itself will gain greatly too. Today is a day of unqualified good news."
